Initial application check

We check your application to see if you meet the standard entry requirements for the course. If you do, you will be invited to upload a mini digital portfolio through the UAL Portal.

Mini portfolio

The mini portfolio should be no more than 30 pages showcasing your best work. It should consist of project-based work demonstrating 2D, and 3D fashion design development as well as your research skills.

You can create the pages in any layout (For example: presentation boards) but they should be uploaded as jpeg images.

Please remember:

The quality of the work is more important than the quantity

Work should be organised by project

We do not accept portfolios by post.

We review mini portfolios from March to April 2024. Selected applicants will be invited to attend a Full Portfolio Review / Interview in person, based on review of the mini-portfolio. Notification of this decision will happen via the UAL Portal.

Full Portfolio Review / Interview

This takes place from April to July 2024.

When attending in person your portfolio should:

Contain a minimum of four projects

Include a toile or finished garment realised to a high standard

Demonstrate a strong personal identity

Include extensive research and rough work

Demonstrate evidence of technical skills / 3D sense (appropriate to pathway specialism)

Show sensitivity to fabrication and colour

Evidence visual interpretation skills.

The interview will assess your suitability by determining your:

Potential to benefit from the course

Reasons for choosing the course

Communication skills

Motivation and commitment

Fashion point of view.

Full Portfolio Review and Interview take place on the same day. Whilst we encourage everyone to attend in person if they are able to, we do understand that this may not be possible in all instances, and in these cases we can arrange for a full portfolio to be submitted online and the interview to be conducted via Skype.

Our workshops have been designed to allow access to industry standard digital design tools. Our main purpose is to equip students with the skills and confidence to use these tools in parallel to their professional practice.

As well as providing instruction on skills that are ‘of the time’, our workshops also allow students to experiment and sometimes by chance achieve moments of serendipity, which allow for innovation.

Knit

Our knit (constructed textiles) workshop is a specialist workshop for the fashion and textile programmes.

It's also an open access workshop once students have received an induction and training on the specialist machinery. The workshop is divided into several distinct zones with different specialist machinery in each area.

Our print and dye facilities consist of a print workshop, wash-out areas, a heat transfer printing room, dye and finishing workshops and an exposure room.

The silkscreen workshop and associated areas provide facilities for dyeing fabrics and yarns and water based screen printing onto fabrics, varying from sample sizes to repeat lengths, with placement and furnishing screens available.
